Where we work
We are present in the Andes and Amazon of Peru.
Our work begun in the Cusco region and later on expanded to Loreto.
The Andes: Cusco
In the southern Andes, Cusco is the home of Machu Picchu which brings floods of visitors annually. Only 10% of rural residents study after secondary school, compared to over 40% of their urban peers.
Scholarships Programme participants move from their villages to Cusco city to study. Our Youth Hub is located near the centre, to support the young people during their studies.
Located only 21 km from the city, Ccorca is a rural Quechua-speaking district. Its 2,300 residents live in 12 remote mountain communities. Most families rely on subsistence farming. Huanoquite, on the other hand, has around 6,900 inhabitants across 12 Quechua-speaking communities. This district is located only 52 km from the city, but the mountain roads make for a 1.5-hour journey by bus.
The Amazon: Loreto
The Amazon is Peru’s biggest region. Loreto covers a huge area of the Amazon basin, and is home to the country’s most remote communities. Primary attainment and access to tertiary education are very low.
Iquitos is at least 8-hours by boat from the communities we work with. It is home to our Youth Hub, which offers a safe space for young people to live, study and socialise.
We work in Santa Clotilde, a remote settlement in El Napo district. The area has an 80% poverty rate. Geographical, cultural and economic barriers limit opportunities for school leavers.
